As the academic year nears its end, many students rely on NSFAS allowances to cover essential living and academic expenses. A common question on the minds of funded students is whether NSFAS will provide payments during December 2025. Typically, NSFAS covers expenses for tuition, accommodation, and other necessities during the academic term, but the uncertainty around December payments can leave students concerned about their financial stability during the holiday period.

NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

Every year the online Nsfas application date is the 21st of November 2024 and closes on the 15th of December 2024. So from November through to December to the first week of January, applicants can apply. Over 10 months, NSFAS allowances will be paid the first week of each month.

What Does The Nsfas Pay In December 2025-2026

The amounts listed for housing, a living allowance, transportation, and educational materials must comply with the most recent DHET criteria that have been authorised:

Tvet Colleges

Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
Transport R7000 per annum
Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Universities

Accommodation(As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
Living allowance R15, of 000 per annum
Book allowances R5200 per annum
Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

Documents Needed To Apply For Nsfas 2025

Anyone who wishes to apply for Nsfas must have the following documents:

Copy of ID
Proof of household income
Parents’ IDs (for dependent applicants)
Academic record

How To Apply For Nsfas Funds In 2025-2026

Follow the process given below to apply for 2025-2026 Nsfas:

Visit NSFAS Online Application 2025 portal: www.nsfas.org.za/apply-online-2025
Then, you create your myNSFAS account
After that, you click on the “Apply” tab on the NSFAS page
Update all your NSFAS online Application 2025-2026 information.
Upload your supporting documents
Submit your application by clicking on the “SUBMIT” button
