South Africans who missed the closing date for submitting their applications for financial support under the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) can exhale with relief. The government financial aid organisation has announced that it has chosen to lengthen the deadline and provide interested students with an additional chance to apply.


Through the myNSFAS platform, which enables students to apply using a smartphone or computer, NSFAS applications can be submitted electronically. You must use your personal information to create a myNSFAS account in order to achieve this.


A reference number will then be given to applicants as confirmation of their application. You must be a citizen of South Africa and have an annual family income of no more than R350 000 in order to be eligible for the bursary.


 The 2023 Application Extended Date

The online Nsfas application date for the 2023 academic year starts from the 2nd of November 2022 and closes on the 7th of January 2023. But due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the date may be extended to the 27th of January 2023.


 What Does The Nsfas Extended Allowance Cover 2023


The Nsfas allowances can be used for the following:



  • Accommodation
    As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance R15, of 000  per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

  • Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350  per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum


Nsfas Requirement 2023

Attach to your application the following documents:

  • All applicants must provide a copy of their ID document. Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided
  • A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs
  • Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse,
  • Proof of income applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide latest payslip, not older 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse).


Apply Nsfas 2023-2024

The step-by-step points below will help you to apply for 2023-2024 Nsfas:

  • NSFAS applications are submitted online through the myNSFAS portal (www.nsfas.org.za), where students can submit their applications using their smartphones or computer.
  • To apply you must create a myNSFAS account online, then proceed to the application tab where you will fill in your personal details.
  • Applicants must ensure that they receive a reference number when they have submitted their application, as proof that their applications have been successfully submitted.

Note: If you don’t have a digital device or internet connection, you can still apply by going to your local Thusong Center or National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and following the same procedures there.
