NSFAS-funded students, did you know you may be qualified for extra funding? The Nsfas extended allowance provides additional support for students facing financial challenges. South Africans who were unable to submit their applications for financial assistance under the NSFAS by the deadline may rest easier. The government financial aid agency has declared that it has decided to extend the application period and provide interested students one more opportunity to do so.
Through the myNSFAS platform, which enables students to apply using a smartphone or computer, NSFAS applications can be submitted electronically. You must use your personal information to create a myNSFAS account to achieve this. In this article, we will look at the eligibility criteria, application process, and covered expenses.
The 2025 Application Opening Date for 2025
The online Nsfas application date for the 2025 academic year starts on the 20th of September 2024 and closes on the 15th of December 2024. However, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the date may be extended to the 31st of January 2025.
What Costs Does the NSFAS Extended Allowance Cover for Students?
The Nsfas allowances can be used for the following:
UNIVERSITY
- Accommodation
As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence) - Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500Â per annum
- Living allowance R15, of 000Â per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET
- Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350Â per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum
Nsfas Requirement Needed To Apply In 2025
Attach to your application the following documents:
- All applicants must provide a copy of their ID document. Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided
- A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs
- Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse,
- Proof of income applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip, not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse).
Other documents that may be required, if applicable

Apply for Nsfas In 2025
Follow the process below to apply online for the NSFAS bursaries for 2025:
- Â Create a profile: Use this link to register for a myNSFAS account: https://my.nsfas.org.za/ or get the NSFAS App from the App Store or Google Play. Your username will be your ID number.
- Â Apply now: To amend your personal information and upload the supporting documents for your application, click the “Apply” option.
- Â Complete: Submit your application
Note: If you don’t have a digital device or internet connection, you can still apply by going to your local Thusong Center or National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and following the same procedures there.Â
