Why Is Nsfas Not Funding Private Students Housing; Nsfas Funded List 2025

Student financial aid from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will not be provided for the 2025 academic year due to violations of other funding conditions. Students attending universities and TVET colleges will not receive NSFAS funding for the 2025 academic year, according to a statement released by the Minister of Higher Education. Upon completion of their first undergraduate degree, university students were no longer eligible for support.

This amount excluded an additional budget approved by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande which is awaiting virement approval from the National Treasury. Nzimande congratulated students who were successfully funded and said that their bursary guidelines were based on many principles.

Some students were denied the NSFAS funds because of the following:

• Because some students have neglected to report an increase in household income,(which would affect their eligibility for financial aid).
• Other students have also provided fake information.
• Others have already completed their undergraduate studies

Nsfas assistance is only available to students whose household income is below R350 000, and R600 000 for students with impairments.

How Much Does Nsfas Give As Allowances To Students

Nsfas pays for student registration fees, tuition fees, and many more. Below are some of the allowances that are given to students each month:

• Book Allowances:

During the week of February 10–14, 2024, book allowance for pupils enrolled for the entire school year will be distributed in two payments of R2 600 each. All NSFAS students are eligible for a yearly book allowance of up to R5,200.In February 2024, students who have been registered for the entire academic year will get the maximum book allowance.

Students who have only registered for one semester are eligible for an R2 600 book allowance. Please be aware that you will be responsible for the remaining balance of R2 600 if you decide to discontinue your studies in the second semester after receiving your annual book allowance.

• Meal Allowances:

For five (5) months (Semester 1: Feb-Jun or Semester 2: Jul-Nov), students who are registered for just one semester will get R7 500. Except for distance learners, all NSFAS students are eligible for a meal allowance of up to R15 000 per year. The allowance for students who have registered for the entire academic year will be distributed throughout ten months (Feb-Nov).

• Private Accommodation Allowance

Before an application for private housing may be taken into consideration, a valid lease agreement must be uploaded. Following the approval of your application for private housing, you will be paid during the first week of the following month. Your most recent rental payment will be included in the initial payment. Your rental duration and the amount will determine your payment.

Please be aware that whether you are staying at home or in an on-campus residence, you will not be compensated for your private accommodations. Additionally, distance learners are not eligible for the private housing stipend. The maximum private housing allowance for a student enrolled for the entire year in 2024 is R34 400. The most a student can pay in one semester is R17 200.
